A marriage certificate is an official document from the government issued by the province of Ontario that confirms that your marriage has been legally registered. It is the document used as formal proof of marriage for legal, administrative, and government purposes.
It’s not the same as a marriage licence, for which you apply before the wedding to obtain a legal permission to marry. After the ceremony, the wedding officiant submits the completed licence so that your marriage can be registered. The Record of Solemnization of Marriage is a ceremonial document that is usually given out on the day of the wedding. It is not usually accepted as legal proof of marriage.
Couples usually need a marriage certificate to legally change names, update their government IDs, apply for benefits, or submit immigration or sponsorship applications. Because you can only apply once the marriage has been officially registered, understanding how the process works and when to apply can help you avoid unnecessary delays.
