Ireland is represented in Canada by the Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa and by Consulates General in Vancouver (opened in 2018) and Toronto (opened in 2022). The official mission websites are hosted on ireland.ie, the portal of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The embassy in Ottawa is also accredited to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Saint Lucia.

There is no career Irish consulate in Montreal. Residents of Quebec are served by the embassy in Ottawa and by the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Quebec City. Honorary consuls also assist Irish citizens in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, and St. John's, although they act in an honorary capacity and may not always be available immediately. Note that all Irish passport applications from Canada are now made online through Passport Online, and foreign birth registration is processed in Dublin.

Ireland has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since March 9, 1999, and Canada joined on January 11, 2024. As a result, Canadian public documents intended for use in Ireland need only an apostille and no longer require legalization at the Embassy of Ireland.

Private documents, such as affidavits, declarations, powers of attorney, and certified true copies of diplomas or passports, must first be signed or certified before a notary public or lawyer.

Original public documents, such as provincial birth, marriage, or death certificates and court documents, can usually go directly to the apostille stage.

The apostille is issued by the Canadian competent authority. Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan issue apostilles for documents issued or notarized in their jurisdictions, while Global Affairs Canada handles federal documents and documents from the other provinces and territories.

English documents usually go through in Ireland as they are. Quebec papers issued in French are a different story: expect to need a certified English translation. Before you send anything, check with whoever is receiving the documents, whether that's an Irish government office, an employer, or a university.

An apostille saves you a trip to the embassy, but it won't rescue a copy that was notarized wrong or sent to the wrong office. That kind of slip usually costs a few weeks. Can the Embassy of Ireland help with my online passport application?

No. According to the embassy, all passport applications from Canada are made online, and the embassy cannot assist with queries about applications submitted through Passport Online. You can track your application on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

The embassy asks applicants not to contact it about applications still within the published processing time, unless there is a genuine emergency.

What should Irish citizens do in an emergency outside office hours?

Call the embassy's main number and leave a message by pressing 1 with your name, the nature of the problem, your location, and contact details. Staff monitor these messages regularly.

Another option is to call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Dublin at +353 1 408 2000. If someone's life or safety is at risk, call 911 first.

Who can apply for an Irish working holiday authorisation in Canada?

Only Canadian citizens are eligible to apply for Irish working holiday authorisations through the embassy. The program allows young Canadians to live and work in Ireland for a limited period.

The embassy does not provide status updates for working holiday applications processing for less than eight weeks, or for visa applications processing for less than ten weeks.
