Before you can use a marriage certificate in the United Arab Emirates as proof of marriage, it must be properly attested. Before the UAE officials will accept documents from other countries for official purposes, these documents must be attested to verify that they are authentic. This requirement usually applies to family visa applications, spouse visa sponsorship, residence and dependent visas, some banking transactions, tenancy agreements, and property-related issues. The UAE authorities may delay, return, or deny applications that don't have proper attestation on documents in the application package.
It is also important to understand that the UAE is not a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention. As a result, an apostille certificate alone is generally insufficient for use in the UAE. Instead, marriage certificates must undergo embassy legalization, which typically includes authentication by the issuing country’s foreign affairs authority, legalization by the UAE Embassy in that country, and final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs upon arrival in the UAE. This guide explains each step of the process to help ensure your document is prepared correctly for official use.
