To use Canadian-issued documents in Turkey, they must undergo a legalization process depending on their type and intended purpose.
There are two main methods:
- Apostille (simplified one-step process)
- Full legalization (authentication followed by consular legalization)
Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2024, and Turkey is also a member. As a result, many Canadian public documents can now be legalized through the
apostille process and are generally accepted in Turkey without further consular legalization.
You can have a document issued with an apostille by the appropriate Canadian competent authority, depending on where it was issued.
Apostille authorities in Canada include provincial authorities in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan, and Global Affairs Canada issues apostilles for documents issued by the Government of Canada and for documents originating from provinces and territories that do not yet provide apostille services.
Each authority can handle only documents issued in its jurisdiction. For instance:
- In Ontario, you can't apostille a document from Quebec
- In some cases, a notarized or certified true copy may be used instead, depending on what the authority needs
Some provincial offices, like Ontario's ODS, may offer in-person services that are quicker and more efficient.
Since both Canada and the Republic of Türkiye are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, documents issued with an apostille are generally accepted in Turkey without further consular legalization. However, depending on the document type or the requirements of Turkish authorities, additional steps may still be required, such as:
- Official translation into Turkish
- Getting the supporting documents notarized
- In rare or special cases, you can send it to a Turkish consulate
Consular fees and specific payment methods may apply if further processing is required. Requirements can change from case to case, so it's best to check with the right authority before submitting.
